Death Of Ex-Association Member

Sadly we have been informed that Alan Howling (593038 24th Entry) passed away on 11 December 2021.

Alan had allowed his membership to lapse in 2019 because of poor health. We understand that Alan’s funeral has already taken place.

  1. Alan was entry Sgt App.
We were both “Westo’s” and I spent several holidays at his home in Crackingtonhaven, N. Cornwall where I was well received.
Sad to learn of his passing as he was one of the fittest in the 24th and a most agile goalkeeper for the entry soccer team.
Regrettably only met up once after passing out from Hereford – Peterborough for the AGM Meeting and at the 24th 50th Anniversary Reunion at the UJ Club in 2005.

  2. I remember Alan Howling well having been our entry Sgt Apprentice. In those days I was a great Surrey County Cricket Club supporter. I lived in Surrey and they had a superb side during the 1950,s containing four or five England players , also winning the County Championship several years in succession. Alan and myself always watched the current Test Matches if we ever had the time in the TV room of the Apprentice NAAFI . For some strange reason being a Cornishman he always supported Yorkshire and would never accept the obvious very high standards of Surrey. We used to tease each other. Sadly we last met at the 24th entry reunion at the UJ club London in 2005 when I believe about ten of us turned up.
    RIP Alan Charles (jimmy) James

  3. I too was sad to hear of Alan Howling’s demise. After Hereford, we met in London for a flight to El Adem, Libya, from where we were transferred to Episkopi for two and a half happy years in Cyprus. I am sure the two Clerk GDs who replaced us at El Adem had not such a good time. We met once more when I popped over from Medmenham to White Waltham, when I discovered he had married Ivy, a lovely lady, whom he met in Cyprus. My commisserations to her should she read this. When met at the two 24th re-unions he was much the same pleasant and humorous person. I shall always fondly remember him.
