  1. Thank you for your interesting article Bob. It is always fascinating to read of ex-Apps who made it to aircrew status and got to wear the brevet. It also served as a reminder to me of my own (sadly grounded) service. In my 80’s I invariably answer any question about my 14 years as their being the best of my life – and, in general, it is true. However, Bob’s article caused me to recall that while I met and worked with many excellent people (ie Air Cdre Bird-Wilson), it is also true that the RAF then was a broad church and included a few whom I prefer to forget. Sadly for some officers the Queen’s grant of a commission was seen by them as some sort of elevation akin to the ‘divine right of kings’. As we grow older and wallow in nostalgia it is perhaps prudent that remember that the Service also embraced the odd one or two who left an unpleasant taste.
